How do I use the Map Navigation Toolbar?

The following features are available on a map.

Zooming

  • Zooming allows you to descend to street level details on the map you are viewing, so that you will see all street and autoroute names.
  • You may also zoom out to city or region levels to have a bird’s eye view.
  • Note that as you zoom out on a map, the level of detail diminishes.

Panning

  • Slide the visible area of the map in any direction (north, south, east, and west) by clicking on the Pan buttons (which border the map itself).
  • This allows you to see neighboring areas on the same map.

Toggle Road, Aerial, and Hybrid Views

  • Toggle between the following views
    • Road view (displays street names and landmarks)
    • Aerial view (displays satellite images of the region that can be zoomed down to street level)
    • Hybrid view (displays satellite images and street names at the same time)

Hide/Show Map Toolbar

  • Map navigation getting in your way?
  • Hide or show the Map Navigation Tool bar (by clicking on the Hide/Show button).

How do I find a location on a map?

  • Use the “Find on a Map Tab”.
  • Simply enter the Street Address, City Name, Province and/or Postal Code.
  • Results are displayed in two ways:
    1. A pushpin on the map. Click on the pushpin to see detailed information
    2. Listings on the left hand side of the screen. Click on a listing or location to refine your search.Searching for a business? Click on the Business name. To see more business listings, click More Businesses.

To save, share, email, and print the Find on a Map results, please refer to Save, Share, and Print. Help Tip: Having trouble finding a street? Try also entering in the street name and city and province.

How do I Find a Business?

  • Looking for a business in Canada? Use the Find a Business tab.
  • Simply enter in the business name (e.g. Joe’s flowers) or Keyword(s) (e.g. Flower Shop)
  • In the Location box, type a Street Address (310 Main S), and/or a City Name and/or a Postal Code.

Results are displayed in two ways

  1. Numbered darts on the map. Click on a dart to see more detailed business information
  2. business listings details on the left hand side of the screen: the name of the business phone number address (when available) a link to “More info” which displays a more detailed business info page on YellowPages.ca

How do I find Driving Directions?

Looking for Driving Directions?

Enter a From: and To: Street Address, or Postal Code, or City Name. We recommend however that you use more specific addresses (e.g. 325 Milner Ave, Scarborough, ON), rather than (From: Ottawa To: British Columbia).

Results are displayed in two ways:

  • a Route on the Map (with numbered turning points) between points of different colors marked A, B, etc.
  • A list of Driving Directions on the left hand side of the screen, (see the title called Driving Directions), together with an Estimated Time (in Min.) and Total Estimated Distance (in km.);

To add multiple points to a Route.

  • Use the On the Left Hand Side of the Screen and enter another Destination in the Search box (use recommended form for entering a specific Street Address, or Postal Code).
  • The Route and list of driving directions will refresh

How do I use the What’s Nearby Menu? Looking for a restaurant near a hotel? A flower shop near your house? Once you have found a specific map location or business location, you can find Nearby Businesses or Institutions by using the What’s Nearby feature.

  • Use the headings e.g. “Daily Needs” to select from a quick list of top keywords nearby your search.
  • OR Use Category box to enter in your own keyword (e.g. “restaurants”)

This will give you highly localized results to your search query.

Select/deselect What’s Nearby Services

  • Click on a 2nd level heading (e.g. Gas Stations).
  • The map will show multiple icons
  • Select the desired What’s Nearby icon/location
  • To save it to a map (see Save, Share and Print)

How do I make the icons go away?

  • To de-select the rest of the Services icons , click on the 2nd level heading in the What’s Nearby menu (e.g. Gas Stations); this will clear the map

How do I make the What’s Nearby menu go away?

  • To Hide or Show the What’s Nearby menu, click on the “What’s Nearby” heading (first to close it, and then second time around to open it)
  • Simply use the Hide/Show button on the right-hand side of the panel.

How do I use Live Traffic?

Looking for the quickest route home? Try the live traffic section.

How do I use this feature?

  • Select a location on a map.
  • Click on the Live Traffic Link (right beside What’s Nearby)
  • Use the legend to see the correspondence between colors shown on the map and the traffic type (from “Heavy traffic” to “Moving well”).

How do I hide this feature?

  • To Hide or Show the Live Traffic feature, click on the “Live Traffic” heading (first to open it, and then second time around to close it).

Why can’t I see traffic for my area?

  • We are currently working on new locations in Canada for live traffic. Watch for more locations to be added in the near future.

How do I Save a location or business?

Easily save a location (pushpin), or business listing, to a Personalized Map (one that you name and choose to save).

Step 1: Login

  • Login in Maps.ca via a Facebook account (or Live ID/OpenID)
  • Click Login on the left hand side and a window from Facebook (Live/OpenID) will pop-up, prompting you to login.
  • Enter in your user ID and password.
  • Click Login
  • Once you login, you are redirected back to Maps.ca

Step 2: Find a Location

  • Find a location or business using the Find on a Map, Find a Business, or Driving Directions Features.
  • Click on the pushpins/or darts representing businesses on a map.
  • In the location popup, choose Add to a Map
  • Select one of the map names under your account.

Why should I login?

  • Logging in allows you to save personalized maps to your account.
  • The next time you login to Maps.ca, you will be able to retrieve maps with saved locations from previous searches.
  • Find them under the heading “My Maps” in the “Personalize and Share” section on the left hand side of the screen.
  • Example: you can have a map named “Wedding Reception”, “Directions to the Church”, “My Favourite Restaurants” etc.

How do I Share Personalized Maps?

You can share a map or driving directions in 2 ways

  • through your Facebook/Live ID/OpenID account in Maps.ca
  • through the Email feature

Via your Facebook/Live ID/OpenID account on Maps.ca

  • When saving a location to a personalized map, you will have the choice of granting them Public or Private Status.
  • Other Facebook users (in your network?) will have created Public accessible maps of their own, and you could browse through their maps and share knowledge and experiences.
  • This features is available on the left hand side under the Personalize and Share headings, marked as “Friends Maps”.

How do I Email a Map?

Do you want to tell your friends about a great Pizza place? Or give them directions to your house?

Easily email directions in the following steps:

  • Find a location or business using the “Find on a Map” or “Find a Business Feature”
  • Click on the “Email” link on the top of the map.
  • Fill in the destination e-mail (i.e. your friend’s email)
  • Fill in your e-mail address
  • Optional: Add a personalized note (e.g. “Meet me here”)
  • Click the “Send” button.

If you have entered a valid e-mail address your e-mail will be sent instantaneously.

How do I Print a Map

  • To Print a Map or a list of Driving Directions, click on the Print icon on the Right-hand side of the screen, on top the map.
  • This generates a printer friendly version that you can print via CTRL-P (on your keyboard) or through your browser’s Print command.

How do I Link to a Map in Maps.ca

Do you have your own website or Blog?

  • If you want to place on your website (or your blog, forum, or an HTML email) a link pointing to a specific location / business listing displayed on a map, click the “Link” link on the Right hand side of the map, atop the map itself.
  • This generates a pop-up window with simple instructions on how to copy and paste the code of your link onto your own website/blog etc. You can even personalize your link with a short text (say, “Great diner experiences here”).

How can I increase the font size on your Web site?

  • Use the instructions below to change the font size on Maps.ca: Use the Text Size Increase buttons at the top right-hand side of the page
  • Or You can adjust the text size in your browser. Please consult your specific browser’s help file for specific instructions on adjusting text size.

What are cookies and how do you use them?

  • The newest dictionaries incorporating common technology slang describe "cookies" as small text files a Web server stores on a user's computer in order to keep track of user patterns and preferences. Yellow Pages Group websites makes limited use of cookies in order to provide personalized content (e.g. remembering your Recent Searches) and protect confidential user information.
  • Cookies are also used to limit the number of certain types of advertising placements you see per day on Maps.ca.
